During the week I make a point to take a shot of my first morning tea or coffee at work. I like to recognise the moment of transition from my time to work time, from a rather more leisurely state to an engaged state. Doing the same on my days at home is rather more sporadic.
I ought to change that. Whether I am going out to my job or working around the house it is still the beginning of my day. Recognising what can seem to be insignificant moments help to ground me in my day but also see something interesting in even the seemingly mundane.
Today I could sink into this mug of coffee. Its smell entices me long before I sip it and enjoy the taste. It isn’t my first hot drink of the day. That was a tea drunk hours ago upon waking and coming downstairs for the first time this morning. It was the necessary fuel to take me from sleepfulness to wakefulness.
Since then Hub and I have taken 15 to the hospital for a check-up. Nothing major, just one of the hundreds people with children who have special needs or disability, or both, make during their lifetime. This time 15 behaved herself terrifically well. That wasn’t always the case. I have no doubt the situation was helped not just by her increasing maturity but having the day’s first appointment. Not having to wait too long meant frustration didn’t have the same chance to build.
Now I am home, Hub is taking 15 to school and I have the rest of the day to do with as I please, until the school bus arrives this afternoon.
So this coffee, so aromatic and enticing is my unwinding treat. The one that says, you’ve been working all week, here, enjoy me, savour me, relax.
And so I shall.
I hope you are able to find a moment to unwind in your day or at least savour a small slice of peace.
